Sound-up for this video is an option.  Phases Africa’s tree root tables are sustainably sourced – we only use roots of naturally fallen trees.  These often very rare old African hardwood tree are found on the banks of rivers in Africa.  In this video we have examples of finished tree roots, some are coffee tables, others are dining room tables or hallway/entry tables.  For conference tables the use of two roots are often required.   These root table bases all require suitable glass tops. During the entire process of preparing these root; from sawing, to power washing, hand-sanding and then applying the finish, great attention was paid on capturing the distinct features and individual characteristics of the tree root. Each piece is unique and an expression of the beauty of Africa’s nature, and the wood itself. Our strict procurement program ensures that we only accept wood from verifiable sources that, we know.  For more information https://www.phasesafrica.com/products/african-furniture/

About: These fun African home decor pieces are individually hand carved wooden “Colonial figures,” representing an unusual mix of African and European cultures. There are no two men or woman alike, and they stand on their own. They come in a large variety of colors, shapes and sizes, and are more striking in pairs or groups of three or more.  Smaller Colonial figure sizes are also available to purchase as well as life size figures. By that we mean the colonial figures have almost normal size figures (full-figures) as far as the width goes.

For the most part these "full-figured" colonials are all male sculptures and they have outstretched hands, in order for a tray to rest in their arms, as seen in below image, taken at Chitwa-Chitwa- game lodge in Kruger National Park, South Africa.  In this instance the colonial figure was placed in the bathroom holding a tray with toiletries, they can also be placed in an entrance of a home with welcome drinks.  How about a waiting room with magazines stacked on the tray, the creative possibilities are wide open.

Tall Skinny Sizes: Range from 1.5 Meters – approx 2 Meters tall (last image seen in this post)

Small Skinny Sizes: There are also smaller colonials available to purchase approx. 1 - 1.4 Meter tall, however these smaller colonial figures have a minimum order requirement.

Full Figured Small Sizes: Are approx 1Meter Tall.

Full Figured Sizes:  Are approx. 1.3 - 1.5 Metes tall most of these colonials have their hands stretched out in front of them, however, there are some with their hands in their pockets.

Available Colours: 99% of the colonials are wearing white pants and the colour options comes down to the jackets - most common colours are; Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, White.

Male Colonial Figure Hat Options:  The red fez hats or the white pith helmets are the 2 options and here and there you may find a bald guy, the latter is very rare.

Sustainable African hardwoods are used in the making of these tree root tables.  Furthermore, the process of unearthing a tree's root system is no small task.  As a result Phases Africa works with a team of outstanding and knowledgeable woodworkers.  Therefore, all our stunning dining room, coffee as well as, conference tree root table bases are meticulously removed using top-of-the-line heavy equipment.  For the reason that no damage to any part of the root will occur when the removal is professionally managed.  The root is then hauled to the workshop where it undergoes a proper cleaning, using a heavy-duty sandblaster. Finally, the root is meticulously sanded by hand before the finish wood treatments are applied.

The team of tree root miners, often disappear for weeks at a time, venturing deep into the African Bush in search of fallen trees with spectacular root systems.  The trouble is, often major parts of the tree's root system are still hidden underground, although we only use trees that have fallen on their own account.   Above all we never cut down trees to use for the making our tree root table bases.  Even more, these professional woodworkers are very au fait at excavating the remaining roots still somewhat ensconced in the earth.  The first example of our tree root table bases is a stunning Coffee Table, made from African Hardwood called Leadwood  - Size: 1720mm (length) x 900mm (width) x 400mm (height.)

African wooden plank masks, as wall art, is an ideal home decorating idea, in either a contemporary or traditional home or office. Furthermore, African masks are also the single most influential piece of African Art as well as, the most recognized as such, all over the world.  The masks we are featuring today are all hand carved from wood by Africa's indigenous people. Also the mask invariably goes hand-in-hand with the apropos attire that are worn in these Celebrations.  As a result these African tribal masks are either celebratory in nature: giving thanks for the great harvest.  Spiritual: by initiating transformation or calling on the spirit for guidance or to thank them. And last but not least,  religious in nature.

COVER PAGE:

The wooden masks featured on this post cover page are from - Kenya’s Giryama people that hand carve these flat wooden post, to serve as tombstones called Kikangu.  Furthermore, the grave markers have several functions; representing the Giryama’s way of life as well as, the ancestor’s spirits are honored by erecting these post.  As a result, these markers also serves as conduit between the ancestral realm and the land of the living.

The abstract and geometric forms and carved patterns of Kikangu serve as a roadmap representation of the spirit. The gravestone marker is also a tribute and blueprint of the deceased time on earth.

In post - Renaissance Europe, Kuba Cloth, the embroidered and appliqué decorated raffia cloth from the Congo (formerly Zaire), entered the curio cabinets and treasuries of kings as well as, nobles the finest representation of African art. More recently, the mastery of Kuba cloths' abstract patterning was a source of inspiration to artists such as Matisse, who displayed part of his large collection on the wall of his studio.

This textile is tightly woven using strands from raffia palm leaves. Kuba cloth comes in two styles. One has a flat weave with little or no pile while the other has a velvety rich pile.   Vegetable dyes are used as colour on the raffia threads and then embroidered onto finished cloth to create patterns such as circles, rectangles, creative curvatures, and lines. Kuba cloth is used for ceremonial skirts, wall hangings, or mats for sitting and sleeping on.

When I lived abroad being homesick meant I longed for Africa bush, after all, it is Africa's soul. Furthermore interior of safari lodges like Molori is what ultimately led me to launch Phases Africa Furniture & Decor in Los Angeles almost 20 years ago.
"If I know a song of Africa, of the giraffe and the African new moon lying on her back, of the plows in the fields and the sweaty faces of the coffee pickers, does Africa know a song of me? Will the air over the plain quiver with a color that I have had on, or the children invent a game in which my name is, or the full moon throw a shadow over the gravel of the drive that was like me, or will the eagles of the Ngong Hills look out for me?"

Wabi-Sabi the latest trend in Interior Design, is a very familiar concept in Africa art.  The Description on Wikipedia  - “In traditional Japanese aesthetic, wabi-sabi () is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete"

In Africa we are quite au fait with the concept of Wabi-Sabi for the reason that traditional tribal handmade art in Africa are purely based on this very concept. Due to products such as chiselled, hand-carved, and handmade African Art, Furniture as well as, Africa Decor, will indeed mirror the beauty, talent as well as the imperfections of humans.

The African wooden bed featured on our main page, of this post, was hand carved by the Senufo people, residing in West Africa, each bed is uniquely different (see more examples below.)  These beds were predominantly used during siesta time, and not for sleeping on during the night.  A great percentage of these beds as well as, all the stools were carved out a single piece of wood.  These beds can either be used as a sculptural element in any room or as a coffee table in a home or office.
